A community member / A church member
Submitted by Deac, Boston

Initially before I became a member of Eliot Congregatioal Church I attended various community meetings there. The pastor opened it up to the use of the community with issues to discuss concerning the community safety, education, housing, youth and the list goes on.

My very first visit on Sunday was so moving that I wanted to be a part of such a warm, inviting and informational church. I quickly experienced growth in my spirit and faith and in doing so, began work to see the church grow.

Our Pastor and first family, officers, organizations and educational structures are all working together to advance the kingdom of the church and the safety and involvement of the community seven days a week.

The edifice that sits at the corner of Walnut and Dale Streets is an upspoken jewel in the Roxbury community.

The Eliot Congregational Church and Eliot Educational Center bring much to the community. The church provides the community with inspirational knowledge through its ministry in worship, music, prayer, bible study and communiyt outreach. As the Educational Center sets a sound foundation for ANY child to gain knowledge to prepare them for their future in a spiritural, cultural and diverse settings.

One would be surprised of what the Eliot Church and Educational Center has to offer.

Eliot
Submitted by Don, Boston

I started attending Eliot when I was 4 years old and left when I was 23 and married. Eliot was an enormous influence on my life and Christian beliefs. It was the first truly bi-racial Congregational Church in the region and I recall a film being made about it. Our lives were centered around Eliot. We attended services twice on Sunday ,attended programs on Friday and played basketball in its gym. We made great friends who to this day keep in touch now more than 50 years later. Don

Eliot
Submitted by David, Boston

My parents moved to Roxbury when I was born in 1931 and Eliot Church was just around the corner. Eliot became a second home to us and scores of others: it provided a place of worship, a community center, youth activities, a staffed gym program, youth groups, and, especially, a place of nurture, spiritual growth and lasting friendships. Although, Eliot kids now live all over the nation, many of us are still in touch with one another. Eliot has a long and fine tradition of service beyond its solid Roxbury Pudding Stone walls. It has spawned many generations of outstanding church leaders far and wide. No matter where Eliot's members may roam Eliot will always be home and the standard around which other churches are compared.

A vital part of a proud community
Submitted by Community Resident, Boston

The Eliot Chuch is located in a community where families are struggling to cope with many of life's challenges. Every Sunday morning and several times during the week, the doors of this magnificant structure are open to anyone in need of prayer, comfort and hope.

The church is also a school for young children. A place where they learn not only the fundamental basics of reading, writing, and math, but also a school that encourages, inspires and challenges them to do their academic best.

The church is a vital part of a proud community.

Not Just a Wonderful Church
Submitted by Trinja, Boston

Eliot Congregational Church of Roxbury is an excellent church. My husband and I have visited there several times and have greatly enjoyed the church services and hearing Pastor Hines' sermons. This is not only a wonderful church, it is also a magnificant school.

About 2 years ago, I was searching for a Kindergarten program for my son. I was looking for something local, affordable, and with outstanding education. I came across Eliot Congregational Church on the internet and I had been meaning to visit the school to see if it would be a good fit for what I was looking for. Initially, a busy and hectic schedule always seemed to get the best of me and I didn't get a chance to check out the school. Last September, I enrolled my son in the same school in which he completed his Pre-K year. By October, he would complain that the school work was too easy, "I already know my A-B-Cs" he often said. It was clear that my son was bored at school and he was looking for a challenge. I then remembered about Eliot Congregational and decided that it was time to give them a call and schedule a visit.

I met with the teachers and they began to tell me about the curriculum and how children even as young as 4 are reading! I was even more amazed that Phonics (a well-needed subject that is quite scarce in the Boston Public School arena) is a part of the curriculum as well. They also showed me the math and science books that they use for K-2, which in my opinion reaches the level of 1st grade! I was sold on the program when I was told that music and language arts were taught on a weekly basis for Pre-K thru 1st grade.

The fact that such a great school exists for such an affordable price was like a dream to me! My only regret was that I did not enroll my son there sooner!!

In the morning, students begin their day with a wonderful 15 minute program in which each class gets up on a stage together and they sing positive songs and recite positive acclamations that encourage friendship, pride for oneself, respect for others, and inner harmony. And they do it in 3 different languages--English, Spanish, and Swahili!

I thank God for this school and my son is happy and is getting the best education!
